Research is recognized as a key pillar in health and health systems strengthening. The lack of such capacity characterized weak health systems and largely accounts for the lack of progress in development of the health sector. SHS is committed to incorporating the development of research capacity, systems building, and career development at the individual, institutional, and national levels through its work. This is achieved through capacity focused activities and/or incorporated into specific efforts in the areas of mental health, infectious disease or health systems research.
