Sustainable Health Systems
Sierra Leone

Sustainable Health Systems is a Sierra Leone-driven, not-for-profit organization aiming to generate evidence responsive to local needs of health care services users, managers and policy makers through fostering effective collaboration in capacity strengthening for research-to-policy translation.

Mission

We implement and generate scientific evidence to inform policy and practice for sustainable health systems in resource-limited settings.

Vision

Health equity through evidence.

Core Values

INFORMING EQUITY IN HEALTH SERVICE DELIVERY AND SYSTEMS

To foster equitable health care for mental health and infectious diseases, we conduct research and generate evidence for cost effective, contextually appropriate and culturally sensitive models of health care. We believe there is no one size fit all solution to health equity; and local ownership of health in which the beneficiaries are part of decision making is the most critical factor to sustainability.

STRENGTHENING SIERRA LEONE’S HEALTH RESEARCH SYSTEM

To foster equitable health care for mental health and infectious diseases, we conduct research and generate evidence for cost effective, contextually appropriate and culturally sensitive models of health care. We believe there is no one size fit all solution to health equity; and local ownership of health in which the beneficiaries are part of decision making is the most critical factor to sustainability.

PROMOTING SIERRA LEONEAN SCIENTISTS

SHS aims to support current, emerging and future Sierra Leonean health scientists who subscribe to its mission and values. SHS holds that Sierra Leonean-led research will better improve the quality of research outputs, ensure responsive research inquiries, and support the promotion of ethical and patient-centred research activities.

PROMOTING ETHICAL GLOBAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIPS

SHS values transboundary partnerships for global health research that can galvanize scientific, human resources, and financial not accessible in country. SHS aims to pursue, model and promote equitable partnerships that counter exploitative relationships and promote mutual respect and trust in the forum of global health research.

FORMULATING CROSS-SECTORAL PARTNERSHIPS

SHS holds a core belief that partnership is essential to success in developing sustainable, actionable evidence for health in Sierra Leone. Therefore, SHS aims to serve as a mechanism by which to support and leverage expertise across sectors related to health service delivery and evidence generation in Sierra Leone. In this vein, SHS maintains partnerships across with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Ministry of Defense and University of Sierra Leone. SHS is in the process of developing formalized relationships with other major sectors actors, including the National Public Health Authority and Njala University. In addition, SHS recognizes the unique expertise gained as a service user and/or survivor. Therefore, SHS also promotes and maintains relationships with service user organizations, such as the Sierra Leone Ebola Association of Survivors (SLAES). SHS continues to actively identify additional partnerships which will advance its mission and complement research, policy, and learning initiatives.
